Common Items That Are Flammable In Your Office
Tuesday, April 6th, 2021
Fire safety is extremely important while you are working in any office environment. You should know exactly what is flammable and how to keep it in a safe place. Here are some things that you may have not known were flammable.
Aerosol cans-
You may already be aware that aerosol cans are extremely flammable. They contain propane or butane that is used in the propellant, which gives them those flammable properties. You can find these around your business in many different places such as the bathrooms or the break room.
Drain cleaners-
These products can be found in certain offices. They contain highly combustible chemicals. Not all businesses will have drain cleaners, but it is something that you should be aware of if you do. You should always store them in a safe place.
Cooking oils-
Now, depending on the type of business you work in, you may or may not have an area for cooking. Cooking oils are known to be flammable. Cooking oils can be used in other places than just the kitchen. They are used in popcorn machines that are sometimes in office settings. It’s always important to be aware of the products you are using and to keep all areas of your business safe from fire.
Non-dairy creamer-
We know this sounds a little weird, but your non-dairy creamer is made with artificial flavors, which can cause it to be flammable. A lot of businesses will have this around their coffee station, but it’s still important to put it away in a safe place to avoid any fire hazards that could potentially happen.
Hand sanitizer-
There’s no doubt that hand sanitizer is flammable. It is made with alcohol, which is an extremely flammable substance. Hand sanitizer can give off vapors that will ignite in the air when there is a flame lit around it, such as a candle burning. In 2020, a woman was taken to the hospital with burns on 18% of her body due to a fire started from hand sanitizer. (source)
Oranges-
The juice in oranges can cause a flame to ignite extremely quickly. So, if you keep oranges in your breakroom or anywhere else, keep them in a place where they won’t catch on fire.
Other common flammable items
There are some other common things that you can find in your office that would be considered flammable. Keep in mind that every office space is different and may not have the same items. Either way, it’s important that you remember which items may be flammable and learn how to store them properly.
